Creative Writing Workshop
10:00am-11:00am
In a continuation of session one, we will explore different methods of creative writing. We will discover the thrills of dialog writing, experiment with types of poetry, sharpen our note taking skills, write eloquent thank you notes and other epistolaries, create comic strips and try our hand at the one act play to name a few things. The session will culminate with a group poetry/story slam for the last class with writers sharing their favorite pieces from session one or two. Attendance in session one is not required to take the second session. So sharpen your pencils or power up your laptop if you prefer and see you there! Class will be taught by Kim Campbell. She has found plenty of opportunities to share her love of writing with the Chicago community of homeschoolers. She has worked as a literacy tutor, taught writer’s workshops and zine writing workshops and was the founder of the tween and teen clubs with NUG kids.
Class minimum: 5 kids ages 9-15 years of age. Required: notebooks, writing utensils creative energy, and basic reading and writing skills.

A Young People’s History of the U.S.
11:15am-12:15pm
Did you ever notice history is written by the conquerors? Are you tired of stories about battles won and dates of important treaties and not about soldiers in those battles and the people who experienced those treaties firsthand? Would you like to know what it was really like to be a miner, a woman, a black man or a factory worker during the development of America as a great nation? Howard Zinn attempts to tell history from the lesser heard perspectives. Our class will investigate these perspectives through group discussion and hands on projects. Class will use the book by Howard Zinn “A Young Person’s History of the United States Volume One†as a starting point to explore what it has meant to be an American citizen from all walks of life through different time periods. We will read chapters independently and convene in class to discuss topics (Columbus & the Indians, Black & White, Who Were the Colonists, Tyranny is Tyranny, Revolutions). We will create art, poetry, expository writing and craft projects based around topics of interest so that each student can delve more deeply in to history through their preferred media style.
Class minimum: 5 kids ages 11 years and up. Required: Purchase and read chapters as assigned from the text each week: http://www.amazon.com/Peoples-History-United-States-Volume/dp/1583227598
