A bit about a local nature class that is well spoken of:

I found the Northside Unschoolers of Chicago through the Evanston Home Educators website, which was suggested to me by a local homeschool family. I thought that you and the families in your group might be able to use the resources that we offer here at the Emily Oaks Nature Center, which is part of the Skokie Park District.

We offer 1-time, year-round classes for all ages that involve using the senses, learning outdoor skills, and enjoying the natural world . We also have a playground and picnic area next to the nature center (perfect for a field trip!). I have also provided information on our weekly program for homeschoolers called “Scoutin’ Around,” which draws from the skill-based, patch-earning ideas from scout groups.

We are getting ready for the fall season of “Scoutin’ Around” at Emily Oaks Nature Center, a weekly program just for homeschoolers! Each session includes a nature-focused topic or skill, outdoor games or activities, and creative endeavors like crafts, dramatic performances, or storytelling. Students will earn patches as they participate each week, just like the scout groups in your community. We hope that your students will explore the natural world, learn new skills, and have fun outdoors with us this fall!

Some details regarding Scoutin’ Around:

  • Sessions are held every Tuesday from 1:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m., unless otherwise noted.

  • Students do not need to attend each session; some families choose to attend every week, while others select the sessions that fit in with their current studies and/or interest their students.

  • Session topics change each week, ranging from canoeing and firebuilding, to natural music, to animals that hibernate. See attached “Session Description” for details on each class session.

  • After each session, participants will receive a resource page to encourage further exploration.

  • Students will be placed in one of two class groups based on age at time of enrollment (6-7 years old, 8+ years old).

  • At least a portion of every session will take place outside—please dress for the weather.

  • Fees vary according to the session (see attached “Registration Form” for details).

  • Pre-registration will be required. Registration deadline for first session is Monday, September 15.  Please fill out the attached registration form and fax it to (847) 933-4328, mail it or bring it to Emily Oaks Nature Center to sign up in person. Payment will be due at the time of registration.

  • Each session must have a minimum number of participants in order to run.

Just a reminder:

A few spots are still available in Nature’s Neighbors, a 10-week class for 4- and 5-year olds. For your convenience, this class also meets every Tuesday from 1:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. Stop by Emily Oaks for a registration form!

Please let me know if you have any questions or if I can help in any way.
